Inspiration post – Women

Today, I ran my first Womens group – WISE (Women Inspire Self Empowerment).

Being the first meeting, I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, I am pleased with the outcome. It was a small gathering, only 8 of us, but it was informative, close and we shared many things about ourselves.

I wanted to start a Womens group that not only bought together women in circle, but included activities that nourish our soul. Activities that bring out our rawness and our instincts. Today, we did drumming. One of my beautiful friends who used to work with me taught us the drumming and the 8 of us just stood and moved to the rhythms. No set rhythm, just whatever came to us. It was primal and you could feel the beat through your whole body. Women have always drummed. It’s in our bones and I certainly felt this today when we were all together. I made a drum a few years back from deer skin. It’s a very intricate design and I love it. Such a low tone that you can feel in your chest. I haven’t taken it out in a while and I don’t know why… probably to do with my depression and disconnection, but today, I realised I have missed it and I need to take it out a bit more and just beat it when I am feeling low.

The conversations we had today were inspiring. Women that didn’t know each other. We came together and opened up about our pasts, what has shaped where we are and how we are all fighting inner battles, and we are all looking for the same thing. A sense of community, our tribe, people that will check in on us and become an extended family that we can reach out too. That is missing in so many of our lives, women are detached from this community and whether you are raising a family, or assisting a dying relative, at all stages in our lives, we need other women around us to give us that gentle nudge and tell us we are okay. That they are there to support us and give us shoulders to cry on. Other women that you can actually hold space for and them for you. A proper connection were nothing is held back, where we give our all. We spoke about the role of the feminine today and what that means for us. It was so interesting to hear other people’s perspectives on this and it opened up my eyes a bit as to how I feel about different things. One woman spoke about struggling with now finding her role changing as she is about to become a mother for the first time. I realised that I have issues with the role of the mother, the loss of identity and how I am trying to claw back something for me so I am not just seen as a mother who works full time. I am my own person with my own passions and that’s ok. I can be both. But I need to have my own life as well as the life as a mum.

I really hope this group continues and grows. I want to bring passionate women together and explore our roles in society in many different ways and join together to do different activities that push us out of our comfort zones. I’m hoping this inspires my writing and brings up things from my past, so that I can eventually start to heal.
