The Art of Leaving

So, that’s how you did it.

Your wedding ring on the bench.

xxx

A note left.

xxx

Your scrawled handwriting.

simply saying

‘sorry’.

xxx

Sorry for what?

xxx

What were you sorry for dad?

xxx

Sorry for walking out on your kids?

For walking away from a marriage?

For breaking our hearts?

xxx

I picked up the pieces you know.

The pieces of mum’s life

that lay shattered on the floor.

xxx

Your ring stayed on the bench.

xxx

For weeks.

xxx

Like it wanted to tease us.

Show us that the heart and hand

it belonged too

was empty and devoid

of all feeling.

xxx

The love for your family

left cold

on the kitchen bench.
