Inspiration post – Element of Earth

I feel drawn to the element of earth.  It’s a very powerful element as it’s related to everything.  All the other elements come from it and assist it in its being.

Whenever you eat food, you swallow a part of the earth.  We essentially take in part of the planet to sustain our body.

The element of earth plays a part in our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

I have always let my children play in the dirt. I love it when parents let their kids explore and they get ‘dirty’.  They are not dirty. They are playing with the earth and learning about it and experiencing it for what it is. Natural, raw, in its purest state.  Which is why the earth can inspire so much in writing.

I love feeling the mud on my feet, the smell of the earth after rain.  The other elements interact with it so much which creates all our feelings.  We need to sink our roots into the earth. Ground ourselves and really become part of it to experience peace.  If you do not have your roots in the ground, you can forget about being enlightened and seeing other dimensions of life. It is so important as part of our being to feel this.

Earth is cool, stable, heavy, dry, rough, dense, dull, clear and hard.  When we are ungrounded, chaotic, lacking self-esteem, feeling insignificant, irritable, vulnerable or stressed, we must become one with the earth and let it heal us.

When you think of the earth in your writing, it isn’t only the soil, stones, rocks etc; it is the forests, fields, caves, valleys and gardens.

Earth is associated with abundance, prosperity and strength.

Earth provides us humans with ingredients that we can make tools, build homes and other structures. Think about how much we rely on Earth’s resources to sustain us physically and externally with our lifestyles.

It also has destructive sides. Think of earthquakes, avalanches, mudslides.

Earth is the element that keeps us calm and centred in life’s chaotic ways.

You don’t have to have access to sprawling forests or mountains, you can take a stroll around your neighbourhood just to see its offerings.  Standing outside barefoot, lying on the ground, putting hands on a tree trunk can shift your energy and bring comfort and stillness.

You can tend to potted plants or cook… this is all part of experiencing earth.

Within magical terms and ritual use, earth is associated with the Goddess.  It has a feminine, receptive energy.

The tools used in ritual for earth are the pentacle or a bowl of salt.

The colours are green, yellow, brown and black.

Zodiac signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

Salt is used to cast a circle before ritual.  You can add soil to certain magical charms or use it to cleanse tools or crystals.  Bury things in the earth as part of your ritual.

The planet itself is a ball of life and as the wheel of the year turns, we can see the aspects of life take place: birth, life, death and rebirth.

I feel strongly connected to this Element and I encourage you to get to know the earth around you. Connect, be strong and let it assist you on your journey with your whole life.
